In the summer of 1995/96 the Thornton Cowboys committee along with David Cribb, Richard Gordon, Dennis Smith and Terry Donald discussed transferring the Cowboys base to Maitland to reform the Maitland Mavericks Baseball Club, which wound up in 1973. The Adoption of the name Mavericks, at Dennis Smith and Ben Donalds suggestion, was prodominantly because it sounds great, but also linked the club to its roots.

The 1996 season saw us explode onto the Newcastle Baseball scene with 4 teams consisting of 29 seniors and 20 juniorregistered members. With our 6th grade side taking out our first major premiership by defeating the Athletics in a close game.

Expansion we experience in 1997 was fantastic. Growing from 49 players to an astonshing 80 players comprised of 49 seniors and 31 juniors, Making up 7 teams and our first venture in under 12's baseball. one of the main positives for this season was the selection of Ray Farmer and Brad White in the Newcastle Under 16's Representitive squad.
